Not your average toothpaste flavors

A couple weeks ago we mentioned seeing a bacon flavored dental floss. How about a bacon flavored toothpaste? It could be yours for $5.

BuzzFeed profiled 20 unusual toothpaste flavors and they range from bacon to pickle and even a champagne-flavored toothpaste!

Do you think you’d brush more frequently if you had different options for toothpaste flavors?

Santa is back!

Look who came back for his yearly dental visit! This is Santa’s 33rd year with us!

Bacon flavored dental floss? (It’s true!)

What flavor floss would encourage you to floss more often?
I found this Bacon Flavored floss last week and thought some of my carnivore friends would like it!

They had cupcake floss too!

Study: Brushing teeth could prevent heart attacks and strokes

Just in case you need another reason to brush your teeth regularly, a new study out shows that regular brushing could prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Researchers from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University determined that brushing on a regular basis could eliminate atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries. Atherosclerosis is one of the major risk factors for heart attacks and strokes based on the fatty deposits blocking the flow of blood to the heart and brain.

Nike Women’s San Francisco half marathon finisher!

I (Dr. Mann) ran the Nike Women’s San Francisco half marathon last weekend with my friend Stephanie who I went to dental school with. We ran the LA marathon together 8 years ago and decided to run a much more reasonable half marathon this time. Our goal was to finish it in less than 2 hours…we did it in 1:57!

Couldn’t be happier!..especially excited about the cute Tiffany’s necklace we got!

Best and worst Halloween treats for your teeth

Delta Dental recently released their best and worst list when it comes to Halloween candy.

Best candy:

  • Sugar-free candy
  • Chocolate

Worst candy:

  • Hard candy (think lollipops)
  • Chewy candy (think caramel, taffy)

Chocolate tends to dissolve faster in your mouth than other candy, so the sugar isn’t in contact with teeth as long as hard candy. Chewy candies take longer to break down and are often higher in sugar.

If you’re looking to get rid of the candy stash after Halloween, check out some Halloween buy back programs in the area. (Many orthodontists take part in these programs!)

5 Major Health Threats That Your Dentist Can Predict

Found this great article about health threats that your dentist can predict.

When you look in your mouth you may see teeth that need whitening, but a dentist may see signs of heart disease. A study published in the Journal of Dental Research found that many dental problems can be signs of serious health complications. University of Washington School of Dentistry professor Philippe P. Hujoel, DDS, PhD, says the sugar and carbohydrates in food, known as “fermentable carbohydrates,” are to blame.

Some exciting times in the Gottfried Family!  Dr. Gottfried’s youngest grandson Tristan has just turned 1!  He had a very tasty cake to smash and devour thanks to Tiffany’s Bakery.  This little guy is a really good eater and loves his “Poppa”.

This Little Guy turned 3 Last week!  This is Dr. Gottfried’s oldest Grandson, and Dr. Mann’s nephew, Barrett.  Pretty much the cutest little 3 year old in town.  He took his best friend Henry on a train ride with him to the Nantahala Outdoor Center.  They had such a blast!    And yes…dentist’s grandkids can have ice cream every once in a while too!

We are happy to announce that we are sponsoring the West Asheville Tailgate Market this year! It is so important to support the local food scene whenever you can! Get out there and buy from our local farmers at the farmers market…or you can at least order local foods from someplace like Mother Earth Produce and have them deliver the food straight to your house!

Dr. Gottfried and Dr. Mann have been very involved in the local food movement. Dr. Gottfried was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota so this farming thing is second nature to him. This year he has started raising heritage chickens on The Farm. He built pretty much the coolest chicken coop you have ever seen that is designed after an old country church. They have 200 baby Barred Plymouth Rock Chickens happily cruising around the new chicken coop!

Dr. Mann and her husband Jon have been growing raspberries for the past couple years on their farm in Waynesville. They have been selling to a local farm to table restaurant in the Highlands/Cashiers area. This year they have planted more blackberries, blueberries, figs, cherries, honeyberries, marionberries, and hazelnut trees! It’s going to be a very busy picking season this year because this will be the first year that all 400 raspberry plants will be mature.
